Welcome golfers to the third edition of the St. Marys Golf Team’s eNewsletter. In this edition, you can expect some of the same of what you have been seeing in the first two editions: golf industry tips, exercises, and news from the St. Marys Golf Team. This week we bring you even more new, and exciting golf-related news, events, and advise that will bring you even closer to the game of golf!
We start off by providing you a look at upcoming events and news from the St. Marys Golf and Country Club. Of note, the first mixed night of the season is coming up quickly that you and your friends will not want to miss. Also coming up next week is the annual Members’ Appreciation Night. The St. Marys Golf Team will be down at the course, cooking you burgers and ‘dogs’ – so don’t miss this opportunity to take advantage of free eats cooked by the owners themselves. Next, the On-the-Course tip section focuses in on tips from Pebble Beach, site of this year’s US Open. Pebble Beach Golf Fitness director Laird Small with Dave Allen provide tips on how to break 100, 90, and even 80 on courses from the likes of Pebble Beach to the St. Marys Golf and Country Club. From here, we move onto the St. Mary Golf Blog’s first ever review on ‘Must-Play’ Ontario golf courses. In this edition, we visit the Sunningdale Golf and Country Club’s Thompson Course in London, Ontario. Be sure to check out below how the St. Marys Golf Team felt about one of London’s most prestigious private golf courses. Finally we end off with the major focus of St. Marys Golf’s eNewsletter, the St. Marys Golf Fitness Academy. This week the guys down at Stonetown Physiotherapy follow up the S-Posture exercise with the C-Posture golf fitness tip. Once again, we have provided in-depth videos to go with the C-Posture tip that provide exercises to help with improving your golf posture. Remember, "Get out and GOLF!"
Sincerely,
The St. Marys Golf Team

News & Events:
Ladies Scramble - A fantastic day of ladies golf.
This week played host to the first tournament of the 2010 golf season: The Ladies Spring Scramble. Ladies from all over St. Marys and area came out to the golf course on Thursday, May 20th to compete in a friendly, scramble-type golf event at the course in St. Marys. The event, designed more around fun than competition, contained tons of laughs and good times had by all. Over 100 partricipated on a wonderful day filled with perfect weather. The winning foursome for the ladies scramble had an impressive score of 66 and consisted of: Elaine Arthur, Cheryl Kruse, Roma Harris, and Leslie Bella.
Mixed Night - This Friday!
The first Mixed Night of the year is being held this Friday night, May 28th. This event, also designed strictly around ‘fun’, is a perfect way to get both sexes out on the course together. And just so you know, if you bring your spouse, it doesn’t always mean you have to play together. The women and men can decide whether or not they would like to play with their spouse, girlfriend/boyfriend, friend, or choose to play with another member of the opposite sex. On the menu for Friday evening’s event are wings and we expect that Sandy, long-time golfer and course Superintendent, to have a few surprises up her sleeve for the big night. This event is open to the public, as well as members. Be sure to call the course to sign-up as tee-times are filling up fast!
BX 93 Golf Day - Play 18 for $9.30.
Our first BX 93 Golf Day at the St. Marys Golf and Country Club will be held on Monday, May 31st. Golfers from all over Southwestern Ontario will be visiting the course for the best golf value anywhere! If you are from St. Marys, Stratford, London, or anywhere else in Southwestern Ontario, be sure to book a tee-time immediately as this event sells out on every occasion. Once again, this year’s green fees are only $9.30 to play 18 holes of Champioship golf! Due to volume cart rental is manadatory for this event.
Membership Appreciation Day - June 3rd
Next week on the social event calendar is Membership Appreciation Day. The annual event, held strictly for members of the St. Marys Golf and Country, is a way for the owners and staff with the St. Marys Golf Team to say thanks to the members for their continued support. The owners will be cooking on the barbeque all day outside the patio, so be sure to come out and collect your ‘free’ burger and/or hot dog. Food will be available between 11:30am - 1pm and 4:30pm - 7:00pm.

On the Course: Want to learn how to break 100, 90, or even 80?
How to tame Courses like Pebble Beach - and even the St. Marys Golf and Country Club
Plotting your way around a golf course -- whether it's Pebble Beach or the local muny -- is about a lot more than the state of your golf swing.
The truth is, golfers spend far too little time learning how to "play the game." By that I mean understanding your shot tendencies and what pressure does to your game -- and learning how to plan for both.
It's not about changing your swing mid-round or trying out the latest band-aid. It's about playing smart golf with the swing you already have.
Presented by Laird Small with Dave Allen from golfdigest.com - Laird Small is the director of the Pebble Beach Golf Academy, site of this year’s US Open. Click below for tips on how to break 100, 90, or even 80 on Pebble Beach; apparently they’ll work on a course like the St. Marys Golf and Country Club as well.

Golf Blog: Must-Play Ontario Golf Courses
Sunningdale Golf and Country Club’s ‘Thompson Course’ in London, Ontario
|
Over the next couple of golf seasons, the St. Marys Golf Team will be visiting courses all over Ontario to provide an in-depth look at what the Ontario golf scene has to offer. We will be looking at the pros and cons of some of the best (and worst) courses in Ontario and providing our perspective on whether or not these courses are worth visiting.
This week, one of the St. Marys Golf Team’s very own members, Matt, visits the Sunningdale Golf and Country Club in London, Ontario to play the prestigious ‘Thompson Course’. The course, designed in 1934 by critically acclaimed golf course designer Stanley Thompson, provided a great day of golf for Matt and his golf threesome.
The St. Marys Golf Team provides their perspective on Sunningdale; both the pros and cons of one of London’s most prominent private golf and country clubs. Here what they have to say about the Thompson Course and how it stands up to similar Ontario golf courses and the St. Marys Golf and Country Club.

Golf Fitness Academy: S-Posture
Remove back pain from your golf game.
Do you feel back pain during and/or after a round of golf? The St. Marys Golf Team with Cyril and Jeff from Stonetown Physiotherapy are back again this week to discuss posture and how it affects your golf swing. A loss of posture during the down swing can significantly affect the ‘timing’ of your contact, causing you to strike the ball at the wrong moment and as a result, accuracy is lost and inconsistency prevails. Find out to improve your posture for a more consistent golf swing.
We have also added two golf exercise videos (“Stake in the Ground” and the “3 Position Bridge”) on our St. Marys Golf YouTube Page to help remove ‘S-Posture’. Be sure to check out these videos after reading the article:
Last time, we discussed how C-Posture can have a negative impact on the backswing – specifically, the ability to maintain your spine angle. This week we take a look at a swing fault called S-Posture and how it can affect the timing of your body on the downswing.
S-Posture is the leading cause of low back pain in golfer.
