Hole 17 Grand Opening

Grand Opening of #17 Green and re-designed #18 Fairway and tee-blocks

May 27, 2011 @ 10:00 AM

Members of the St.Marys Golf & CC, Members of the Media and the Golfing Public are cordially invited to attend the Official Grand Opening of our re-designed hole #17 and hole #18 scheduled for Friday, May 27, 2011 at 10:00AM.

The St. Marys Golf & Country Club, established in 1931, is a both an annual member and pay-as-you-play, championship golf course. The original nine holes, the 'Ainslie Nine', was established in 1931. Under private ownership since 1993, the golf course has been upgraded with numerous additions and renovations. In 1994, a new nine holes was constructed, the 'Gowanbrae Nine', at a cost of almost one million dollars. Designed by David Moote, of Moote & Associates, the new layout utilized the rolling St. Marys topography and maintained the degree of difficulty of the original course, by adding two ponds, in addition to the two creeks currently in play on the golf course.

Since adding the new Nine, the ownership group has continued to make a number of changes (the most significant being a new Waterfall attraction at Hole #9) that has made the St.Marys Golf course one of the most revered, and fun-to-play course in all of Southwestern Ontario.

Our most recent construction began last August whereby the ownership group decided to build a NEW #17 Green down to the right, replace old #17 Green with NEW Tee-Blocks for finishing hole #18 - the infamous 'Road Hole'. These two significant changes would make St.Marys that much nicer and would make the two finishing holes unforgettable. The two new holes have been designed by Dave Moote, the designer of our Nine Holes opened for play in June 1995 with inspiration from one of our late owners and visionaries, Earl Staffen, who passed away in March of 2010. Dave and his Team envision hole #17 as a beautiful, large, rolling green, surrounded by mature trees, making hole #17 a slight dog-leg right over Birtches Creek and make this hole one of the nicest to play on the course. Hole #18 would play much tougher with the tee blocks located near the current location of #17 Green, making #18 a dog-leg left. The tee shot on the picturesque finishing hole would require a draw (by right handed golfers), or a fade (from left handed golfers) with a carry of almost 180 yards from the back tees. While completely changing the outlook of both holes, the construction would make each of these two holes both more fun to play, and vaguely more difficult to par.

The real inspiration for #17 green comes from our former owner, Earl Staffen. The hole is being designed as a way to commemorate a great man, while helping to complete his dream of making the St. Marys Golf and Country Club the best golf course that it can be. Earl was a kind and humble man, with a strong desire for greatness, and that is what these new holes will reflect. We look forward to the dream of making these incredible, fun-to-play finishing holes a reality. And we are not too far away.
